During
the ‘Dutch Golden Age’ an enthusiasm for still life painting emerged as a new
middle class with expendable money bought these paintings to serve as
decoration and reminders of the transience of life. My newest work, although inspired from the Dutch genre
paintings, investigates the still life in our intransient contemporary
culture. If a culture is to be
defined by the objects it produces then we are a plastic nation, both
physically and psychologically. The objects in the pieces, though not the
objects of daily life, are chosen for their kitschy characteristics and speak
to the absurdity and wonder of our plastic lifestyle. The Protestant moralistic
message of the Dutch painters has been replaced by the plasticized fantasy of perfection
and want, known as the American Dream.
